Key risks to weigh

Regulation. No local licence — you would be dealing with an offshore entity outside local oversight.

Recourse. No local compensation scheme or fund-segregation guarantee if the broker fails.

Funding. No verified local payment rails — deposits route via cards or wire with conversion costs.

So you have heard people talk about "trading" and "forex" and "pips," but the idea of putting your hard-earned rupees into something you do not fully understand yet feels like a bad idea. That is exactly where a demo account comes in. Think of it as a flight simulator for trading: you sit in the same seat, press the same buttons, and see the same screens as a real trader — but the money is fake. You can practise until you are confident enough to go live.

FXCM's demo login gives you $50,000 in virtual funds (actually it is 50,000 units of whatever base currency you choose, but more on that in a moment), access to the same MetaTrader 4 (MT4), Trading Station, or TradingView platforms that real traders use, and real-time market data. It is free. No deposit. No credit card. You just sign up and click "login demo."

What FXCM's demo actually includes for India-based beginners

Let us be specific about what you get and what you do not get when you log into the FXCM demo. The table below shows the main account conditions.

FeatureDetails
Virtual balance50,000 units of the base currency you choose (USD, EUR, or GBP)
Minimum to open a real accountUSD 50 (about 4,100 INR at current rates, but you cannot deposit INR directly)
Spreads (the cost of one trade)From about 0.8 pips on major pairs like EUR/USD (meaning the spread is roughly 0.8 pips, not 0.8% — a pip is the smallest price move)
Commission per tradeZero — FXCM makes its money from the spread, not a separate fee
Available platformsMT4, Trading Station, TradingView (no MT5)
Instruments you can practise onForex (42+ pairs), indices (S&P 500, FTSE 100, etc.), commodities (gold, oil), crypto CFDs (Bitcoin, Ethereum), and shares
Islamic / swap-free accountYes, you can request a demo that does not charge overnight interest (swap-free)
Base currencies for India clientsUSD, EUR, GBP only — no Indian rupee (INR)

A couple of things to notice. First, the demo gives you 50,000 units of the base currency. If you pick USD, you get 50,000 fake US dollars to trade with. If you pick GBP, you get 50,000 fake pounds. You cannot pick INR because FXCM does not support INR as a base currency for Indian clients. Second, the $50 minimum to open a real account sounds small, but remember: you will have to convert your INR to USD or EUR before you deposit, and that means currency conversion fees from your bank.

How to create your FXCM demo account and log in

This is the part that trips up beginners: the registration process is short, but you need to be careful about a few details because the broker's entity serving India is Stratos Global LLC, registered in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG). That is not a regulated entity in India, and it has no SEBI registration. I will talk about what that means in the risks section below. For now, here are the steps to get a demo.

  1. 1
Go to the FXCM website and click the "Open Demo Account" button (usually at the top right).
  2. 2
Enter your name, email address, and country (select India from the dropdown).
  3. 3
Choose a password and click to create the account.
  4. 4
You will receive an email asking you to verify your email address — do that.
  5. 5
Log into the FXCM Client Portal with your email and password.
  6. 6
Inside the portal, you will see the option to "Download Platform" or "Open Demo" — click "Open Demo" under the platform you want (MT4, Trading Station, or TradingView).
  7. 7
The demo will appear in your platform of choice, pre-loaded with $50,000 virtual funds.

That is it. You do not need to upload your PAN card or Aadhaar for a demo account. You do not even need to deposit anything. The whole thing takes about 5 minutes.

FYI
If you later decide to open a real (live) account, you will need to submit KYC documents: your PAN card, Aadhaar, address proof, and a cancelled cheque. Approval usually takes 24 to 48 hours for the real account.

The trading platforms you get with the FXCM demo

This is where FXCM actually shines compared to many offshore brokers. You get three industry-standard platforms:

PlatformBest forDownload requiredAvailable on
MetaTrader 4 (MT4)Beginners, automated trading scripts (EAs)Yes (desktop)Windows, Mac, iOS, Android
Trading StationBeginners who prefer no-download, clean interfaceNo (web-based)Any browser + mobile app
TradingViewAdvanced charting, community signalsNo (web-based)Any browser + mobile app

A note on MT5: FXCM does not offer it. If you are coming from another broker that uses MT5, you will have to pick one of the three above.

Where FXCM falls short: the risks for India-based users

This is the part you need to pay attention to. The demo itself is harmless — it is fake money. But once you start thinking about moving to a real account, the picture changes completely for an Indian resident.

HEADS UP
Trading spot forex or CFDs with an offshore broker (including FXCM through Stratos Global LLC) is illegal for Indian residents under the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) and SEBI rules. The RBI's "Alert List" of unauthorised forex trading platforms contains 95 entities as of November 2026, and while FXCM is not on that specific list, the RBI states the list is not exhaustive. Using an unregulated offshore broker for margin forex violates FEMA and could lead to action by the Enforcement Directorate (ED).

Here is a breakdown of the specific risks:

RiskWhat it means for you
No SEBI registrationFXCM has zero registration with the Securities and Exchange Board of India. If something goes wrong, you cannot complain to SEBI.
No fund segregationYour money is held in the same pool as the broker's operating funds. If Stratos Global LLC goes bankrupt, you are an unsecured creditor — no protection like the insurance you get with SEBI-registered brokers.
No negative-balance protectionYou can lose more money than you deposited. With leverage up to 1:1000 (default) — which means you control $1,000 of position for every $1 of your own money — a small market move can wipe out your deposit and leave you owing money.
Cannot deposit or withdraw in INRBase currencies are USD, EUR, GBP only. You must convert your INR to one of these currencies, paying a conversion fee, and then send it via international wire or card. Local INR rails (UPI, IMPS, NEFT) are not verified for FXCM.
LRS restrictionsThe RBI's Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS) allows you to send up to USD 250,000 abroad per year, but margin forex trading is NOT a permitted purpose. Sending money to fund an FXCM account could be flagged by your bank. A 20% Tax Collected at Source (TCS) applies on the portion above ₹10 lakh per year, but the bigger issue is the legality of the end-use.

How the FXCM demo compares to the legal alternative — trading on Indian exchanges

Since you are in India, you actually have a legal way to trade currency pairs using real money: SEBI-recognised exchanges like the NSE, BSE, and MSE offer currency derivatives on INR-based pairs (USD/INR, EUR/INR, GBP/INR, JPY/INR). These are settled in INR, regulated by SEBI and RBI, and you can open an account with a domestic broker.

Here is a side-by-side comparison so you can see the difference.

FactorFXCM demo (offshore)Legal Indian exchange trading
RegulationUnregulated offshore (Stratos Global LLC, SVG)SEBI-regulated, RBI-governed
Currency pairs available42+ pairs (USD/JPY, EUR/USD, etc.) — but no INR pairsOnly INR pairs: USD/INR, EUR/INR, GBP/INR, JPY/INR
Base currencyUSD, EUR, GBP — no INRINR
LeverageUp to 1:1000 (default), up to 1:400 above $5,000 equity~20–30x (margin-based, around 3-5%)
Account protectionNo fund segregation, no negative-balance protectionClient funds segregated with custodians, SPAN margin protects against excess loss
TaxationYou must declare worldwide income and foreign assets (Schedule FA). Taxed at your slab rate if non-speculative, but unclear tax treatment for offshore CFD tradingExchange-traded currency futures are taxed as non-speculative business income at your slab rate
Deposit methodInternational wire or card (no UPI/IMPS for FXCM)UPI, IMPS, NEFT, NetBanking — deposit in INR directly
QUICK TIP
Practise on the FXCM demo if you want to learn the mechanics of trading — the platforms, order types, and chart patterns are universal. But if you intend to trade with real money as an Indian resident, open a SEBI-registered broker that offers INR currency derivatives on the NSE/BSE instead. You get legal protection, fund segregation, and you can deposit using UPI or NEFT in minutes.

The verdict: who should use the FXCM demo

Use the FXCM demo if
  • You are completely new to trading and want to practise on a professional platform with real market data.
  • You specifically want to try TradingView integration before committing to any broker.
  • You are just curious about what forex trading looks like and do not mind that the money is fake.
  • You are a non-Indian resident living abroad who can legally trade offshore.
Do not use the FXCM demo (and definitely do not go live) if
  • You are an Indian resident planning to eventually deposit real money — the legal risks are real, and the protection is zero.
  • You only want to trade INR-based pairs like USD/INR — FXCM does not offer them.
  • You expect to deposit and withdraw via UPI or bank transfer in INR — FXCM does not support Indian local payment rails.

The demo is a harmless sandbox. Use it to learn, to make mistakes, and to build confidence. Just remember that when the training wheels come off, the road in India has different rules.
